KCRW’s Facebook Photo Contest – Success!

We got approached by Taschen – who in an effort to spread some word about their incredible Warehouse sale, offered us 3 $250 gift certificates for a social media giveaway!

A few folks and I sat down to think about how to merge the giveaway with our audience. I’m going to share my ideas w/ you, tell you which one we selected and why, and then share some examples of the fine fine submissions we got from our KCRW fanbase (which I love more and more daily!)

The Ideas!

1.
Your Coffee Table Book

Taschen is known for publishing incredible coffee table books. If you could publish your own version of a coffee table book – what would it look like? Create your coffee table book cover and upload the image here on the KCRW Facebook wall for a chance to win a $200 gift certificate to blow at the Taschen warehouse sale next weekend. Don’t forget to tag yourself in your image for your friends to see.

Photography

One thing is certain for every Taschen publication – its is chock full of stunning photography. Upload your most stunning photo in 1 or all 5 KCRW photo contests in the following categories… Landscape, Portrait, Black/White, Travel, KCRW themed (up for interpretation). KCRW staff will select the winning photos in each category and will award the 5 winners with a $200 Taschen gift certificate.

* Photos with lots of “likes” will always capture the special attention of the judges – so its good to encourage your friends to visit your photo and hit the like button.

Tag your favorite book cover for a chance to win $200 Taschen gift certificate.
Locate any book cover here and tag yourself for the RANDOM chance to win a $200 gift certificate to blow at the Taschen warehouse sale this coming weekend.

Upload image w/ 50 books (?)
Hidden w/in the covers there will be one winning book cover – selected before the contest is published .
The first person to tag themselves on that book gets the gift certificate.
5 images = 250 actions w/ multiplied impressions.

We went with #2 but decided – that we may as well take advantage of this opportunity & learn a little bit more about our fan base. So we decided to be more specific w/ the photography request. AND what does everyone want to know about their fans!?? Well – where they are located of course. (Also, this served the purpose to communicate that the prize was only beneficial to those in the LA area. This is what we went with:

Hey there LA friends! Arm yourself with your camera and step outside – KCRW wants to see YOU in YOUR neighborhood. Snap a landscape, or place yourself in the shot for a portrait, anything that captures the essence of why you love your hood. Post it here on the KCRW Facebook wall, and leave a descriptive caption telling us which of the pockets of LA you call home!

KCRW staff will select 5 winning photos award each winner with a $200 Taschen gift certificate to blow at the Taschen Warehouse Sale – being held this saturday.

I decided to use the Facebook NOTES feature so that I could properly outline the details – as well as provide some examples – which were EASY to love. I selected some photography from KCRW’s own Anthony Valadez, as he is the master of capturing the essence of his style in community & neighborhood.

The response was overwhelming and led us to wonder if we shouldn’t ask Taschen to publish a book of our fan’s submissions!!! If you have any further questions about how it went, feel free to ask in the comments!
